Open source software is applications that have the programmer's "source code" available to the public for anyone to use and to modify as they want. It means that the software is basically free (within the terms of the licenses it has). Ordinarily, something that is "free" isn't that good - we have all heard the expression "you get what you pay for." One place where that idea isn't necesarily true is with some open source software products.
